D&D 5e magic item generator

Create unique magic items for Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition with mechanics that stay balanced to their rarity. Choose an item type — weapon, armor, ring, wand, potion, scroll, rod, staff, or wondrous item — and a rarity from Common to Artifact. The generator enforces 5e rarity guidelines so a Common item won't accidentally end up with legendary-tier abilities. Every item is fully editable inline and can be copied as plain text or Homebrewery markdown for polished PDFs.

Beyond the item itself, you can generate quest hooks tied to the item and build a lore timeline tracing its history across multiple eras. This tool is part of a suite of game master tools including a statblock generator, encounter generator, NPC generator, dungeon generator, and worldbuilding dashboard.

Frequently asked questions

Is this magic item generator free?

Yes. Item generation is unlimited. Quest hooks and lore timeline events are limited to 5 per day on the free tier. Premium ($5/month) removes all limits and adds save/load and export.

Are the items balanced?

Yes. The generator enforces D&D 5e rarity guidelines — bonus values, feature counts, and effect power all scale with rarity. Common items are restricted to minor utility or cosmetic effects, while Legendary and Artifact items get appropriately powerful abilities with drawbacks.

Can I provide my own item name and lore?

Yes. If you provide a name, the generator uses it exactly as written. Same for custom lore — your input takes priority and the generated content adapts to fit your vision rather than overriding it.

What are quest hooks and the lore builder?

Quest hooks generate adventure ideas tied to your item — retrieval quests, curse removal, rival collectors, and more. The lore builder creates a chronological timeline of events in the item's history across different eras, giving it depth your players can discover over time.

Can I export items?

Yes. Copy any item as plain text or export to Homebrewery markdown for creating formatted PDFs. Items can also be organized into folders and saved to your browser for future sessions.
